#Obtaining an IC Card.
IC cards are valuable tools for anyone travelling around Japan and are generally available in major train stations throughout the country. The cards can be used on many forms of local transport, making them useful for getting about larger cities like Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. They can also be used to make purchases from convenience stores as well as from major takeaway food chains.
IC cards are generally cross-compatible, meaning you can generally use one outside the area it was purchased in as well; that is, a card purchased within the Kansai region could still be used in places outside of the Kansai region.
Note: Whilst IC Cards can generally be used in multiple regions they can not be used to cross from one region to another.
#Journey Planners.
Google Maps is probably the best place to start planning journeys on local transport, with the site being beneficial for gathering timetable and route information on bus and metro services.
