#Kuroishi.

Largely overlooked by tourists, a visit to the city of Kuroishi is highly recommended for anyone wanting a slice of Edo-Period Japan in a laid back setting.

Highlights: 黒石市中町重要伝統的建造物群保存地区 (Kuroishi City Nakamachi Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings), Nakamachi Komise Street (pictured), Kanehiranarien Garden (Sawanarien Garden), Apple Historical Records Museum.
Transport: From JR Aomori take the JR Ouu Main Line train to Hirosaki, then change to a Konan Railway Line train. The journey should take around 1.5 hours.

#Itayanagi.

For a unique day out, head to Itayanagi. The town is known for being a major centre for apple production and also features many interesting apple-themed displays.

Highlights: Chuo Apple Mall, Furasato Town Centre, Ringo Work, 青柳館足湯 (foot bath).
