Getting around Japan
#Advice on getting around Japan by bus and train.
Here are some tips for a more stress-free travel experience around Japan:
-
Try to keep bags to a suitable size for overhead storage compartments on trains (no more than 30cm x 50cm x 80cm ~ D x W x H). This will save the need to book train seats with oversized baggage or pay for luggage forwarding. It will also make things easier when it comes to moving about the country.
-
When booking journeys involving one or more transfers, check if transfer times are sufficient. Try to allow at least 10 minutes (15 minutes at larger, busier stations) between services. This is especially important if you are not certain where you need to go for the next service and/or have luggage to carry about.
-
Be mindful to avoid travelling on local transport during peak times. Note: for busier places like Tokyo, trains and buses can start to get crowded as early as 6 am.
-
If travelling on any of the JR Rail Passes, take advantage of the free seat reservations. This will give you a better chance of acquiring a seat and not having to stand for part or all of the trip.
-
If booking an overnight bus, strongly consider opting for one with extra comforts such as leg rests, privacy curtains, and an onboard cloakroom. This may be more expensive than a standard no-frills bus yet it will better help ensure a good night's rest before arrival.
-
Take the time to research places where you are scheduled to transfer. Many of these can be quite interesting and are often worth more of one's time.
-
Consider carrying a small stash of ¥100 coins (about 10) to use for coin lockers as not all lockers will accept IC cards or other payment cards.
-
Many larger train stations have more than one area with coin lockers. When storing luggage in coin lockers at larger stations take note of where your coin locker is located and allow plenty of time to collect any luggage if you have booked onward travel.
-
Charge any devices you may need for longer journeys the night before in case your chosen form of transport lacks charging facilities. Please note that trains with onboard charging facilities will normally have traditional outlets rather than USB ports.
-
If using a rail pass, remember that the pass may not cover all sections of a journey or even a whole section. Check how much of your planned journey is covered by any rail pass you plan to purchase via the Navitime website at https://japantravel.navitime.com/en/area/jp/route/ and click on the journey you plan to take to see what sections your pass will cover. Note: there will be an option to select your pass in the route finder and calculator.
