With a wealth of sightseeing opportunities, the city of Kumamoto is a great place to spend a few days. 

  • Highlights: Suizenji Jojuen Garden, Kumamoto Castle, Sakura no Baba Josaien (pictured), Kumamotojo Inari Shrine, Kengun Shrine, Kumamoto Castle Inari Shrine, Kitaoka Natural Park.

  • Bonus Tip: Sights can be spaced a fair distance apart, consider grabbing a Kumamoto City Tram 1 Day Pass for ease of getting around.

#Day Trips from Kumamoto.

1. Uki.

Home to the historic and picturesque Misumi West Port, the city of Uki makes for an ideal day out. 

 

  • Journey Duration:  Local trains run between Kumamoto and Uki Stations, taking just under an hour each way. 

  • Highlights - JR Misumi Station: Misumi West Port, Old Misumi Summary Court, Ryujo-kan, Urashimaya (pictured), Site of Uto District Office.

  • Rail Pass: A JR Rail Pass is valid for travel on this journey. 

  • Bonus Tip: For a luxury experience, consider taking the A-Train between Kumamoto and Misumi. Note: a JR Pass can be used to ride this train; however, reservations are required.  A timetable can be found here.
