Getting Around Japan by Bus.
#Long Distance Buses.
When it comes to long-distance bus travel, Japan certainly leads the way with travellers being offered many choices to suit their needs and budget.
Types of long-distance bus seating options include:
1. Standard seating.
Standard seating, as its name might suggest, is the cheapest and most basic option. Buses with this type of seating are clean and relatively comfortable enough for journeys that are around a few hours or less.
-
Pros: Budget-friendly option - cheaper fares than other seating classes.
-
Cons: May not provide enough comfort for longer journeys, Many services of this standard lack onboard restrooms.
2. Seats with privacy curtains/canopies.
Some buses will offer privacy curtains or canopies. Privacy curtains generally screen off individual seats while canopies are great for those who don't want the lighting shining on their face as they try to sleep. In addition, many buses with privacy curtains also have single seating - ensuring individuals more space on board.
-
Pros: More privacy, seats more comfortable than standard seats, usually have restrooms on board.
-
Cons: Higher in price (but usually still a good deal), some buses may charge an extra fee to rent the privacy curtains, two-seat row versions of these buses may pose challenges when it comes to having to get up from a window seat - difficult to avoid invading neighbours privacy when getting up to use the restrooms, etc.
3. Sleeper Cabins - The Dreamsleeper.
A relatively new concept, the Dreamsleeper offers passengers on overnight services the chance to relax in private cabins whilst aboard the bus. They are a good option for those wanting to catch a better night's sleep and arrive more refreshed at their destination.
-
Pros: Fully private, high comfort level, restrooms on board, tables in cabins for those wanting to use laptops, provision of blankets and sleepwear.
-
Cons: Quite pricey in comparison with other options, limited to services between Tokyo and Osaka.
